Trying to get something for nothing really works sometimes, if what you're after is a headache. It was much smoother and snappy scanning large over there seeing as the software (PS) is actually made to run in that environment natively. Although, slanted horizons and film placed in the holder sloppily make this a miss more than hit proposition, so. to be able to crop right to the edge in Vuescan and be done with that part of it. I'm trying to keep the file size as small as possible, but that still means a bit over 1.5GB initial file. VueScan 9.7.99 makes document and photo scanning easier and more accurate. Even with 4GB memory, trying to do this in a virtual machine, or even via Wine under Ubuntu, is a bit taxing. I'm scanning 6x9 images at 6400 dpi, then resampling down to 2400 in PS. However the developers have not been able to tie down what the problem is so this is ongoing.Yes, Rick, that is the workflow that I once desired, and still do really, but I have a couple of issues with it right now. I was able to get at the packet stream whilst the scanner failed using usb debugging and capturing the stream with wireshark.
I have also more recently been engaged in a developer thread on the xsane dev list and provided diagnostics as best I can, but it is still not clear whether there are issues with the usb code in the kernel, the libusb code or within sane itself. Having to do this as root is not exactly an ideal solution! However in my case I think that the problems are not yet triaged and there are many reported issues running scanners with usb3 ports on the machine they are connected to, with analogous posts on forums for a number of different linux distributions.
